Can culture make us more human, more humane? This year, Umeå’s largest performing arts festival, MADE (Music, Art, Dance, Experience), examines humanity under the theme "Being Human".

"Who am I? What does it mean to have a voice? By calling into question and challenging, culture can make this thing of being a human being larger and stronger," believes American artist and the Made Festival's artistic director, David Moss.

A central theme for this year's festival is the voice and its possibilities. A number of strong vocalists are among the contributing For the first time ever, the festival will also include theatre. Acclaimed theatre company Blind Summit from England, with its macabre sense of humour, will present its puppetry in a performance entitled The Table.

This year's dance acts will examine the relationship between body and thought in different ways, Moss explains, who makes special mention of the poetically important dance seen in French-Tunisian dancer and choreographer Héla Fattoumi's new performance Masculines. The performance by hip hop duo THEESatisfaction can also be a real treat, Moss believes. Catherine Harris-White and Stasia Irons deliver high-class hip hop through the Sub Pop record label.
