Eldfågeln
Latin passion and Russian folk tales marry in this playful concert that incorporates one of Mozart's best-loved works for piano. Directed by young, up-and-coming talent Joshua Weilerstein.
Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov's (b. 1960) music encompasses a whole world; modern tones mix with Jewish klezmer, Spanish flamenco, Portuguese fado and Argentinian tango. Golijov is a highly popular contemporary composer who receives commissions from all over the world. The piece entitled Last Round is an homage to his childhood idol and greatest source of inspiration, tango legend Astor Piazzolla.
Joshua Weilerstein astounded the conducting world when he won the famous Malko Competition for Young Conductors in 2009. The 22-year-old American took home both first prize and the audience prize, after which his career sky-rocketed.
One of the pieces he conducted during the competition was The Firebird. The colourful piece was written by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) on commission from the famous Russian Ballet. Based on a Russian folk tale, the ballet was a great success and Stravinsky immediately went on to write this orchestral suite.
Audiences, critics and musicians alike love charismatic pianist Marianna Shirinyan, originally from Armenia, now living in Denmark. Together with NorrlandsOperan's Symphony Orchestra, Shirinyan will perform one of Mozart's best-loved piano concertos.
