\u201cIt\u2019s when producers and organizers come together that things really start to happen. It\u2019s not exactly easy to work across national borders\u2014personal connections mean a lot,\u201d says Peter Hauptmann of Norrbottensmusiken in Lule\u00e5. He\u2019s sipping his third or fourth cup of coffee of the morning at the Oulu<\/a> Library, where the Arctic Pulse<\/a> Producers Network conference is in full swing.Since 2008, he has been a driving force behind a series of cross-border music projects that have led to a long line of musical exchanges, events, and networking meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 2021, the Norrlands Opera\u2014and thus V\u00e4sterbotten\u2014will also be included in the collaboration funded by Interreg Aurora<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 There are more similarities than differences among us at this latitude, and we have a lot to learn from one another. These are tips and tricks we can\u2019t get from Stockholm, Oslo, or Helsinki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a lecture hall<\/strong>, Colm O\u2019Herlihy, the Irish founder of Inni Music in Iceland, has<\/strong> just emphasized the importance of cultivating one\u2019s uniqueness in the global music industry. (Later, he\u2019ll honor his own roots by singing Enya in front of an enthusiastic karaoke crowd.)

Among the many collaborations<\/strong> that have emerged during the project, she particularly recalls a jam session in Pajala, where musicians from different countries came together and quickly found common ground. Tonight, she is looking forward to sharing a similar experience with the Finnish audience when the Nordnorsk Jazzensemble performs its Kven concert, *Kaipu*, at the Valve Cultural Center. \u201cFor the Norrlands Opera, it\u2019s natural to work across borders,\u201d says CEO Helle Solberg, who drove here in her own car to participate in the project\u2019s steering committee meeting and see the S\u00e1mi opera Ovll\u00e1<\/a><\/em>.<\/strong>

\u201cIn the Arctic region, we have to deal with enormous distances, and sometimes it\u2019s actually closer to a city in a neighboring country,\u201d she points out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The network offers opportunities<\/strong> to organize effective tours, establish a pool of musicians for orchestras in the region, and share responsibility for supporting and promoting culture in the north. This work is particularly important in relation to the endangered minority languages in the region, but also for strengthening new generations of musicians and event organizers.


A recent example is the Finland tour in February, which the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra undertook with soloists Katarina Barruk and Hild\u00e1 L\u00e4nsman<\/a>. Another example is the focus on young artists, with the Ume\u00e5 bands Marlin and Deppa participating in the Norwegian festival Rallarrabalder in Narvik.

\u201cTogether with our partners, we want to continue this work and create better conditions for artists to pursue their careers over the long term,\u201d says Helle.

The next day, the conference participants head out onto the archipelago ice near the seaside resort of Nallikari, where the fifth edition of Frozen People<\/a> is taking place\u2014a festival featuring electronic music and temporary art installations.
