In her research, she sheds light on what is happening in the gray areas of healthcare and in the shadow of the pharmaceutical industry.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a cultural studies detective, she has, among other things, investigated the illegal organ trade, which in turn has led her to counterfeit medications.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Western patient who illegally purchases a kidney from an unknown donor\u2014a poor boat refugee, for example\u2014may subsequently be treated with ineffective medications. The result: the kidney is rejected.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another example is the counterfeit malaria medications sold in enormous quantities on the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-noor-blocks-heading nb-heading nb-cursor-default nb-heading-h2 mb-24 no-bottom-line\"><em>\u201cFew people realize that the market for counterfeit medicines is larger than the international drug market.\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But crime is by no means limited to the cynical exploitation of poverty and serious illnesses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Few people realize that the market for counterfeit medicines is larger than the international drug market. When you travel abroad, you might take the opportunity to buy various medications. Men sometimes buy Viagra, for example, without knowing where it comes from.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut Swedes are also staying home and shopping online to a large extent. It\u2019s important to know that 95 percent of online pharmacies are unauthorized. You should look for the Apoteket logo\u2014the green cross\u2014which links to the Swedish Medical Products Agency,\u201d she says.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criminal organizations are difficult to tackle. In such cases, it may be more effective to influence our attitudes, as the Swedish Medical Products Agency did in its information campaign about \u201ccounterfeit medications\u201d last fall. Susanne Lundin believes that The Galloping Cure could also play a role here.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-noor-blocks-heading nb-heading nb-cursor-default nb-heading-h2 mb-24 no-bottom-line\"><em>\u201cWe may have strong principles, but they can go out the window when we or our loved ones find ourselves in a bind.\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artistically highlighting how society is infiltrated by cynical forces helps to awaken our critical faculties. Art, after all, has entirely different tools for reflecting on events and our human ambivalence, she argues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013\u202fWe may have strong principles, but they can go out the window when we or our loved ones find ourselves in a bind. Healthcare providers may also experience this ambivalence when it comes to their patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you had the chance, what would you say to Teresa Hart, the doctor in the opera, at the beginning of the opera\u2019s story?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013\u202fI\u2019d advise her to talk to someone about her thoughts.
