On this particular day in November, a couple of weeks before the opera\u2019s thrift sale, she is wearing a fuzzy sweater with tigers on it, which she found at a thrift store in Prague last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We follow the tigers down into the Norrlandsoperan\u2019s catacombs to look for a gray hat in size 62. The hat rack, which has several levels, stretches far into the darkness of the basement. Despite our search, we don\u2019t find what we\u2019re looking for, and the hat ends up on the costume department\u2019s list of items to procure. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Klungan and the Moom Theater<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Anna Eliasson has been a costume technician at the Norrlandsoperan for just over a decade. Before that, she worked for many years as a freelance costume designer, including for the comedy troupe Klungan and the Moomsteatern in Malm\u00f6. For many years, she also ran the vintage shop D\u00e5 och nu, which an employee would manage while she was away on theater assignments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was fun, but after 25 years of wandering from place to place, I felt it was time to find some stability in my life, and that\u2019s when this job came along,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Wide-Angle View<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As a costume technician, she has developed a very special ability to read everything that happens\u2014and that might happen\u2014on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf blood is going to be splattered on the stage floor\u2014which is also sloped\u2014we\u2019ll have to make sure it\u2019s as slip-resistant as possible. Maybe we\u2019ll put special soles on the singer\u2019s shoes,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

A Practical Perspective<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Early on in the process, Anna gets involved in analyzing the artistic ideas from a strictly practical perspective. This is especially true for all the costume changes that need to be planned into a tight schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In costume-tech jargon, a \u201cquick change\u201d means that the dresser has less than a minute to get the performer into a new outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn *The Cunning Little Fox*<\/em>, with a cast consisting mainly of children and teenagers, we had 32 quick changes during a one-hour performance. We had six costume changes behind the scenes,\u201d Anna recalls with a smile. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Holistic Approach<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

During rehearsals, she sits with the stage plan in hand, observing the work of the director and the ensemble. Entrances and exits are noted and timed, and her problem-solving mind is working at full speed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Yes, I\u2019ve developed a kind of wide-angle perspective. It\u2019s important to be attentive to all changes and potential risks. \u201cIf I see that the choir is going to walk backward in their long dresses, I have to alert the director to the risk of tripping, but also be prepared to fix a lot of skirt pleats,\u201d says Anna. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

The Clothing Cycle<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Anna takes great pride in caring for the costumes. Not only because they must reflect the costume designer\u2019s vision for each performance, but also because of the cycle of which each garment is a part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The costume department does its best to reuse as much as possible and regularly sell off surplus garments through its recurring secondhand events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore each performance, I talk with the costume designer about what to keep and what we can get rid of. When our sales corner is full, I contact the marketing manager,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Masterpieces at Bargain Prices<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As usual, this year\u2019s Opera Second Hand features a wide and unique selection. Here you\u2019ll find practical work boots from this fall\u2019s \u201cblueberry opera,\u201d *The Italian Girl in Algiers*<\/em>, as well as exclusive tailored garments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA true masterpiece at a bargain price is the witch\u2019s dress from *Hansel and Gretel*\u2014a bright yellow creation adorned with sequins and pom-poms that Susanna Levonen wore,\u201d says Anna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she talks about her favorite costumes, a little flame flares up in her eyes, and it continues to flicker as she recommends this spring\u2019s opera, *The Mistresses*<\/em>, based on Elfriede Jelinek\u2019s novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDirector Franciska \u00c9ry and costume designer Basia Bi\u0144kowska have long been looking for an opportunity to work together, and it\u2019s a collaboration that really sparks,\u201d Anna says. \u201cJust wait until you see Basia\u2019s costumes\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Another role<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Back in the daylight on the foyer level, she is asked one last question: \u201cIf you could choose another role in the theater\u2014any role at all\u2014which one would it be?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She thinks for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 I\u2019d be on an artistic advisory board and help decide which productions we should stage. But I\u2019d still like to keep this job! <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
