A dramatic evening is in store, charged with emotion and daring virtuosity. As the icing on the cake, the program concludes with Beethoven\u2019s timeless masterpiece, the Fifth Symphony\u2014also known as the \u201cFate\u201d Symphony.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German star clarinetist and composer David Orlowsky is coming to the Norrlandsoperan to perform his own <em>composition, *Shadow Dancer*\u2014a <\/em>beautiful, expressive work with a strong minor-key tone. Orlowsky has described his playing style as an extension of his own voice\u2014an approach that is clearly reflected in tonight\u2019s solo concert, rich as it is in flowing, beautiful, and singable passages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an appetizer, Orlowsky presents Richard Strauss\u2019s Mozart pastiche, the elegant Serenade in E-flat major. A piece as light as a cloud and as masterfully crafted as it is, written by the German opera master as early as 1881. In the same decade, just two years later, Richard Wagner\u2014whose operas Strauss would go on to conduct so many times\u2014passed away. And this leads us, notably, to the next piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swedish composer and music professor B Tommy Andersson&#8217;s  <em>Death in Venice  <\/em>is a specially commissioned piece of music, produced by the Norrlandsoperan. Contrary to what one might think, the title does not allude to Thomas Mann\u2019s famous novel of the same name or Visconti\u2019s perhaps even more famous film adaptation of it. No, B Tommy Andersson has chosen to write music inspired by Richard Wagner\u2019s death. On February 13, 1883, the famous composer breathed his last in  <em>Ca\u2019 Vendramin Calergi<\/em>, a beautiful 16th-century palace on the Grand Canal in Venice, following a particularly severe heart attack. His wife, Cosima, was inconsolable\u2014it was after this tragedy that she took on the persona of the black-clad, eternally mourning widow as which she has been remembered by posterity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Death in Venice*<\/em> was commissioned for the Norrlandsoperan\u2019s opening concert during the 2014 European Capital of Culture year, when nine composers were each tasked with writing a commentary on one of the nine symphonies. B Tommy Andersson was assigned the fifth symphony, the \u201cFate\u201d Symphony. \u201cThus does fate knock at the door,\u201d as Beethoven himself described the opening bars of his famous symphony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evening also concludes in this way, with three short and one long \u201cknock.\u201d Beethoven composed and worked on the Fifth Symphony alongside several other projects during the first decade of the 19th century; the earliest sketches date all the way back to 1804. Perhaps the dramatic musical language can be explained by this very uncertain and dark period. Beethoven was in his thirties and had already begun to feel the effects of his worsening hearing loss. The continent was also plagued by recurring ravages of war due to the Napoleonic Wars, a circumstance that further clouded the introspective composer\u2019s outlook. The Fifth Symphony finally premiered alongside the Sixth Symphony, a few days before Christmas 1808 in Vienna. Naturally, it was Beethoven himself who conducted. The famous premiere lasted four hours; the Fifth, of course, was played last, when most people had lost their enthusiasm. So there was certainly no immediate breakthrough. Nevertheless, the Fifth Symphony has come to be perhaps the world\u2019s most famous classical piece. And in 2025, more than 200 years later, we\u2019ll enjoy it once again, as if time had stood still. Internationally, he has worked with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (ASO), the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the Philharmonie Zuidnederland, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, to name a few.<br><br>He has shared the stage with prominent artists such as Gautier Capu\u00e7on, Ning Feng, Alena Baeva, Lucas and Arthur Jussen, Alexandra Dariescu, Bruno Philippe, Alexandra Suonum, Tom Borrow, Andrei Korobeinikov, Alexandra Conunova, Alba Ventura, and Denis Kozhukhin, among others.<br>In June 2020, Santonja was selected as one of the four most promising young conductors to participate in exclusive master classes with Iv\u00e1n Fischer and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He holds a Master of Music in conducting from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and a Master of Music in percussion from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He also holds an advanced degree in percussion from the Escola Superior de M\u00fasica de Catalunya (ESMuC) in Barcelona.<br><br>Jaume\u2019s career includes founding the music collective AbbatiaViva, which explores innovative and accessible ways to present music. When he performs Mozart\u2019s clarinet concerto, the clarinet part becomes a vocal line, and even in his award-winning duo project with lutenist David Bergm\u00fcller, he \u201csings\u201d arias by Henry Purcell and John Dowland on his clarinet. Their joint album, <em>*Alter Ego*<\/em>, was released in the spring of 2022 on Warner Classics.<br><br>For 21 years, the four-time ECHO\/Opus Klassik winner traveled the world with his trio to explore the intersection of classical music and klezmer. After a major farewell tour in 2019, the three musicians went their separate ways. The time was ripe for a new chapter filled with chamber music, solo concerts with an orchestra, and new compositions.  <br><br>David\u2019s chamber music partners in recent seasons have included Anastasia Kobekina, Antje Weithaas, Lauma Skride, and Martha Argerich. His clarinet quintet <em>*The Clockmaker*<\/em> premiered to great acclaim at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg in 2023 with the Quartetto di Cremona, and in the summer of 2024, his clarinet concerto <em>*Shadow Dancer*<\/em> will premiere at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in the Elbphilharmonie\u2019s Grand Hall.<br><br>Almost at the same time, his latest album, <em>*PETRICHOR*<\/em>, was released on Warner Classics, featuring guitarist Daniel Stelter and drummer Tommy Baldu.  <br><a href=\"https:\/\/davidorlowsky.com\/\"><br>davidorlowsky.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<picture
