Insectarium

Insectarium

Insectarium has inhabitants of their own identified species, fantastic creatures embedded with electronic components that sound to each other, relate to each other, and coexist with each other in a world of paper. Deep in the dark forests songs are being sung. Insectarium unveils a journey through the forests of music, where even the tiniest and most irresistible sounds can be heard.

The exhibition presents drawings that have been transformed into sound through a self-made electronic circuit: while one draws along the canvas the pencils create an audio signal, making drawing and its gestures audible. Circuits and small loudspeakers invite the viewer to experience the act of drawing through the ears.

Ana Gutieszca

Ana Gutieszca is an inventor of broken noises and graphite universes. She is fascinated by the transformation of drawing into sound and using graphite as a tool for sound making. In her drawings, she embraces the question of the animal and its ambivalent presence through symbolic thinking. With a background in visual arts and music, she sculpts the unfathomable boundaries of drawing through the creation of analog instruments, the sonification of graphite and its deconstruction into performance art.

Her music is rough as the desert, combining hypnotic brain-melting noise from self-made analogs and blistering broken techno beats from drum machines. She is also known for being the founder and sonic mind behind Third Space, an artist run gallery and collective based in Helsinki Finland, curating numerous exhibitions and the Sound Room concert series since 2013. She has exhibited and performed in Kiasma (FI), Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia EKKM (EE),Flow Festival (FI), Fort Process Festival (UK), Mänttä Art Festival (FI), Inter Arts Center (SE), Bamboo Curtain Studio (TW), Norberg Festival (SE), Santa Catalina de Cádiz Castle (ES), Kunsthall Oslo (NO), Pori Art Museum (FI), etc.
