Dance Plan for Västerbotten
The Västerbotten Dance Plan is a strategic action plan for the development of independent professional dance in the county.
The plan takes the current state of the dance field in Västerbotten as its starting point and outlines directions for how long-term structures can be built to strengthen artistic working conditions, production, and the dissemination of dance throughout the region.
Background
In recent years, the number of professional independent dance artists in Västerbotten has increased, while interest in returning to or settling in the county has grown. Despite this, several fundamental structures required for a sustainable and long-term dance community are lacking, such as workspaces, production resources, and stable funding. The Västerbotten Dance Plan has been developed to address these challenges and create better conditions for independent dance artists to work here.
Main Objectives of the Dance Plan
The goal of the Västerbotten Dance Plan is to contribute to a stronger and more cohesive ecosystem for the independent dance arts in Västerbotten. The plan focuses in particular on:
- Strengthen the long-term sustainability of the independent dance arts through tailored structures within regional and municipal governance.
- Strengthen the funding system for independent dance.
- Establish permanent workspaces for the independent dance community.
The plan includes concrete proposals for action aimed at transforming temporary initiatives into sustainable structures over time.
Organization and Development
The Västerbotten Dance Plan was developed as part of the “Dance Development in Västerbotten” project, which is led by Dans i Västerbotten in collaboration with Danscentrum Norr and funded by Region Västerbotten.
The work was carried out by project manager Nadja Nilsson, who surveyed and analyzed the independent professional dance scene in Västerbotten. The survey was conducted through conversations, interviews, and questionnaires. Ideas, opinions, and perspectives were gathered and analyzed from both those currently active in Västerbotten and those who have moved away from the county.
The Västerbotten Dance Plan was launched on April 29, 2026.
