Music by Edward Elgar and a cello soloist

A concert titled “English Evening” often brings to mind the composer Edward Elgar and his “Pomp and Circumstance,” which is performed annually at the Albert Hall during the PROMS and will conclude this concert.

There will be more Elgar when tonight’s soloist, Sebastian Mirow—principal cellist of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra—performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

The program after intermission begins with Gerald Finzi’s atmospheric *A Severn Rhapsody*—named after Great Britain’s longest river—followed by seven of Elgar’s *Enigma Variations*. The concert opens in grand style with George Frideric Handel’s “Fireworks Music.”
