The final exhibition of the year at Vita kuben will be a double opening
This fall’s curator, Georg Weckwerth, has invited Gerhard Rühm to present “24 Favorite Works” —a sound piece and graphic scores. This will be Gerhard’s first exhibition in Sweden, but due to his advanced age—he turns 95(!) in February—he has chosen not to attend. Gerhard has worked as a writer, composer, pianist, sound artist, and visual artist, and early on became part of the postwar, literature-influenced, avant-garde Wiener Gruppe. Since the early 1950s, alongside traditionally styled modernist poetry, he has produced both concrete music and concrete poetry through genre-transcending works, sound poems, and visual poetry, as well as text montages and artist books. His works exist at the intersection of music, language, gesture, and visuality. His sources of inspiration have included August Stramm, Kurt Schwitters, Gertrude Stein, Carl Einstein, and Paul Scheerbart. From 1972 to 1996, Rühm was a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. He has received a wide range of prizes and awards for his artistic work.
“Puddles” by Fanny Carinasdotter
At the same time, Fanny Carinasdotter’s series *Pölar* is on display in the foyer and outside the White Cube as part of an ongoing project about a snow dump in Umeå. Over several years and across different seasons, the site and its surrounding environment have been documented. In some years, the amount of snow at the dump has been so great that it hasn’t had time to melt away before the next winter, resembling a glacier, though of anthropogenic origin. Within the compacted snow deposit, cavities form—labyrinthine passages through which streams of contaminated meltwater flow out, creating pools and rivulets that flow on into waterways, into the marsh, and down into the ground.
Fanny Carinasdotter (b. 1978 in Avesta) lives and works in Umeå. She works primarily with photography and is interested in the history of places and humanity’s use and exploitation of nature. Fanny’s work is represented at the Museum Anna Nordlander, Region Västerbotten, and the City of Umeå. Together with her fellow artists in the Norrakollektivet, she has exhibited at venues including Moderna Museet and ArkDes in Stockholm, Havremagasinet in Boden, and Bildmuseet in Umeå.

Artist, curator, exhibition organizer, producer, and festival director are just a few of the titles Georg Weckwerth, this fall’s curator at Vita Kuben, can claim. Weckwerth is one of the leading curators in the field of sound art and is the founder and artistic director of TONSPUR Kunstverein, which has two venues in the Museumsquartier in Vienna. Georg Weckwerth received an award for his work as an art educator at the Prix Ars Electronica in 2010. He was born in 1965 in Herzberg am Harz and lives and works in Vienna, Hattorf am Harz, and Berlin.
