The Magic Train

What do you do when someone close to you is still there but has somehow disappeared? How do you travel through time and space to a place where Grandma doesn’t have dementia and doesn’t forget everything? A place where Dad is happy and wants to come home again, or where romantic relationships still have their spark?

Eleven-year-old Danja and her older sister are swept up in an adventure where both young and old get to ride the magical Nattexpressen train. They are all seekers hoping to rediscover what was so wonderful before.

But what happens if the Night Express stops running and the passengers disappear? Or if no one back home in the family even wants to believe that the Night Express exists?

The book *Nattexpressen* by Finnish-Swedish author Karin Erlandsson is now being adapted into a major family musical as part of a unique collaborative project between Finland and Sweden.

The music is composed by the Finland-Swedish composer Mikael Svarvar, and the libretto is written by the Swedish librettist Erik Fägerborn. The cast and crew of the production include graduating students from the Musical Theater Academy in Umeå and students at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Jakobstad.

Time is a cone, a funnel – an upside-down form.”

In the beginning you have a lot of time – then it seems enormous…”
Ulf, conductor at Nattexpressen
