Classics as chamber operas

“La Bohème,” from 1896, is the story of a group of young, poor artists whose lofty ideals lead them to a head-on collision with harsh reality.

Set to hauntingly beautiful music—and featuring many well-known operatic gems—their dreams of a free life filled with romance and creativity come to life. But how will things turn out when they can’t sell anything and don’t even have enough money to pay the rent?

Norrlandsoperan is now presenting a touring production of the opera, which originally premiered at Malmö Opera in 2022, directed by Sara Cronberg. The roles are played by young artists, including master’s students from Operastudio Norrlandsoperan. Here we see them in Franciska Zahle’s expressive costumes, with stylistic references to both the 19th century and the bohemian fashion of our own time. She also designs the set, with Bombina Bombast providing lighting and artistic projections. The music is performed by musicians from the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jonas Olsson.
