Explore street dance during fall break
Welcome to the Fall Break Intensive at Norrlandsoperan! Over the course of one day, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in street dance alongside two inspiring dance artists and instructors. The day features four workshops with different focuses and skill levels, and you can choose to participate in one or more classes.
All workshops are free of charge, and you can drop in anytime. No advance registration is required.
We welcome teenagers, young adults, and adults to today’s workshops. You don’t have to belong to any specific age group to participate, but we recommend that participants be at least 13 years old.
Mari Raudsepp – Gqom
Mari Raudsepp introduces participants to gqom, a street dance style that emerged in the townships, on the streets, and in the nightclubs of Durban, South Africa. During the workshop, participants will explore the dance’s expression, energy, and musicality through basic steps and grooves.
This class provides an introduction to the two central styles of gqom dance:bhenga, which focuses on groove and upper-body movements, andijithi, which is characterized by fast, rhythmic footwork. The focus is on the joy of dancing, being present, and finding your own expression through the music.
Sami Hamami – Hip Hop
Sami Hamami works with the many forms of hip-hop dance and combines groove-based dance with floorwork. Through playful exercises and technical elements, participants explore rhythm, musicality, body control, and movement flows close to the floor.
Drawing on the social and creative traditions of hip-hop culture, Sami creates an inclusive workshop where participants can develop both their technique and their personal expression. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to try new ways of moving, whether you’re new to the style or have previous experience.
