The stage is yours

Imagine you’re standing backstage. You can’t see the audience, but you know they’re there. Now you hear the emcee calling your name. It’s time.

At Skapa dans, the choreographers and dancers of tomorrow are waiting in the wings. It’s a choreography competition for young people ages 14 to 22, but also a chance for anyone interested in dance to meet and develop their stage presence through a variety of workshops. As an audience member, you’ll be treated to a smorgasbord of exciting new works!

Emelie Boman is returning again this year as a dancer and humorous emcee.

Intermission of the Year

This year’s professional intermission performance will be “Liminal Spaces” by Janne Aspvik and Markku Essel. Here you’ll encounter dance artist and musician Janne Aspvik (FIN) and sound artist Markku Essel (FIN) in a work that curiously explores the spaces and transitions we might otherwise overlook.

You’ll be able to enjoy the intermission performance during the break out in our lobby.

Here’s how the contest works

Each contestant first participates in their regional round of Skapa Dans. The winner of each regional round then travels to the national finals in Stockholm to compete alongside the other winners from across the country. The national finals will take place March 21–23, 2025, in Stockholm.

A jury consisting of at least three figures from the dance world evaluates each participant and choreographed piece based on common evaluation criteria.

A Brief Overview of the Rules:

• Contestants must be between the ages of 14 and 22.
• The contestant must be a resident of, or have ties to, Västerbotten or Västernorrland.
• The choreography must be at least 3 minutes and no longer than 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
• Maximum of 6 participants per group.
• You must be available throughout the entire day of the competition.
• You may compete in multiple groups but may only serve as the choreographer for one piece.
• All dance styles are welcome

The jury evaluates:

1. Artistic and choreographic quality
2. Communication and presence
3. Originality and personal interpretation
4. Overall stage presence
