Magical meeting between joik and electronic music
Electronic music and Sámi joik meet in Ávus – a Northern Sámi word that means both space and happiness.
The group was formed by the Grammy-winning saxophonist Jonas Knutsson, known from collaborations with Avicii, among others. Knutsson is joined by Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso from Gárasavvon [Karesuando], an established voice within the new generation of Sámi musicians; Jörgen Stenberg, Ume Sámi joiker, cultural worker, oral storyteller and reindeer herder active in the Sámi community in Máláge [Malå], as well as percussionist Mikael Emsing and synthesizer player Andreas Estensen.
Together, they offer a magical and emotional performance where vuöllie [joik] is at the center.
The performance is Bildmuseet’s contribution to the Arctic Art Summit. In collaboration with Norrlandsoperan.
