Stravinsky and Rachmaninov

Cherished world name Boris Giltburg comes to Umeå to welcome spring with one of the world’s most beloved piano concertos: Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto from 1901, the bending, grandiose Romantic piano art opus magnum. The evening also offers a new book written by German-Swedish Lisa Streich and playful playing card classicism signed Igor Stravinsky.

Concert

Peak romance

Just in time for the spring light, Greek conductor Zoe Zeniodi arrives at the Norrland Opera with an absolutely world-class programme. The evening begins with Händeküssen by Swedish-German composer Lisa Streich from 2019. Streich is no more than 40 years old but has already written music for the Berlin Philharmonic. Her use of what she herself calls “mouldy chords” can give an indication of her special and elusive tonal world.

The Kisses of the Hands is followed by Igor Stravinsky’s Jeu de Cartes (card game). A piece from the composer’s late compositions, which are characterized by mischievous nods to classical form, but which primarily carry their composer’s fiery and rhythmic temperament.

After the intermission, it is time for the evening’s main number, Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto. Music that, in its melodic aspiration and romantic passion, stands in stark contrast to the concert’s two more cerebral opening numbers.

Star soloist Boris Giltburg is one of the most sought-after interpreters of Rachmaninov of our time. He got the music with his mother’s milk through his early childhood years in the Soviet Union. Giltburg’s ability to combine technical brilliance with fiery sincerity is considered to be the explanation why he has come to be such a beloved interpreter of the Russian titan’s piano music. This is his first appearance at Norrlandsoperan.
