Double up in Swedish music

Norrlandsoperan offers a packed programme in the spirit of Swedish music. Two newly written works are on the agenda, one of which is a world premiere. All under the direction of the highly sought-after Simon Crawford-Phillips and his spouse Malin Broman, who is the evening’s violin and viola soloist.

The world premiere of Benjamin Staern’s orchestral piece The Eternal, commissioned by Norrlandsoperan, opens the evening. Staern, who is familiar to many from the TV show Kontrapunkt, has made himself famous for his hypnotic-sounding tonal world. His musical universe is as unpredictable as it is easy to recognise.

Malin Broman then takes on both the violin and viola soloist roles in Daniel Börtz’s Double Concerto for One, specially written by the now 81-year-old composer for Broman. A hilarious piece of music, by the magnificent Börtz who, without being technically overloaded, gives Broman free space for his playful and at the same time deeply rooted playing art.

After the intermission, there will be a short orchestral piece Impulses from 2018 written by Slovenian Nina Šenk, known for her poetically titillating tonal language, often with mischievous nods to music history.

Ending the evening is, fittingly, one of the portal names of the Western musical tradition. It will be Thirty-Thirty by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, under the fast-paced direction of Crawford-Phillips.
