Space, mild weather, and a powerful finale
The concert opens with a short piece by the Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova. “Orpheus’ Comet” evokes a sense of space and movement. This is followed by “Halkyoniska dagar” by Britta Byström, a piece that allows the sounds to linger. The title Halkyoniska dagar refers to a period of calm and mild weather. The soloist is flutist Laura Michelin from Norrköping, one of Sweden’s most acclaimed young musicians.
The second half of the concert features Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, one of the composer’s most frequently performed symphonies. The music begins darkly and subdued, but gradually builds to a powerful and triumphant finale. This is an opportunity for the orchestra to showcase its full range, from subdued to grand and powerful.
