The choreography of loneliness
Detached from Others is a musical and choreographic work. A choreography of loneliness to the sound of an organ. To the tones of the organ, Jon R. Skulberg and the iconic dancer Kenzo Kusuda investigate the lonely body. With Kusuda’s unique sensibility, we get an insight into the ambivalence of loneliness – a place between self-imposed isolation and a powerless experience of loneliness.
The organ music is composed by Lil Lacy, who has a special ability to create sensuous spaces with his music. In Detached from Others , she takes her starting point in the organ – a solitary instrument, isolated in a room and in a spatial sound. A specific architectural and sonic body. Often the organ plays alone, in Detached from Others the organ meets itself in several recorded layers that are mixed together in a quadrophonic sound system. Detached from Others speaks to the loneliness in all of us. Loneliness is both an existential basis for life and a social problem. On the one hand, the enjoyment and quality of voluntary isolation, on the other hand, one of the greatest mental health problems of our time: that more than one in ten people feel disconnected from the world in an involuntary loneliness.
A special artistic meeting
The performance has been created in close collaboration between the visionary director Jon R. Skulberg, artistic director of Convoi Exceptionnel, and the award-winning composer Lil Lacy. Together, in a groundbreaking collaboration, they have created new uncompromising formats. The organist is David Bendix Nielsen, who challenges the understanding of traditional organs. The music is recorded and mixed by the internationally renowned sound producer Preben Iwan, who specializes in recordings of classical works in technologically innovative formats. The costume is created by fashion designer Koh Taniguchi. The dramaturgy is developed in collaboration with Astrid Hansen Holm.
