Music by Nino Rota and Jean Sibelius

The fall concert featuring the Umeå Music Society falls squarely into the category of wistful music. It opens with the movements “Waltz” and “Love Theme” from Nino Rota’s 1972 *The Godfather Suite* . The movie *The Godfather* is about the fictional Italian-American Corleone mafia family. The book *The Godfather* is based on Mario Puzo’s novel and the story takes place between 1945 and 1955.

Next, Symphony No. 2 in F major by the Italian composer Nino Rota will be performed. The symphony was composed between 1937 and 1939 but was not premiered until 1970. Its subtitle , *Tarantina – Anni di pellegrinaggio*, refers to the years when Rota taught in Taranto in southern Italy. Each movement consists of beautiful instrumental details interwoven with irony and humor. After intermission, Miguel Chamorro (b. 1997) will be the soloist in a performance of Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47. It premiered in 1904 and is the most frequently performed of the 20th-century violin concertos.

Miguel began studying violin with his father at the age of 3. He made his debut as a soloist at age 6 and, at age 10, won a competition that earned him a scholarship to study in Rome. In 2017, he began playing with the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2022, he earned a master’s degree with a focus on symphony orchestra at the University of Gothenburg under the guidance of violin professor Öyvor Volle. In Sweden, he has worked with the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, but has recently become concertmaster of the Norrlands Opera Symphony Orchestra.
