A deadly drama
A thriller-like opera set in a time of political unrest and war. At the centre are the opera singer Floria Tosca, her beloved, the artist and freedom fighter Mario Cavaradossi and the cruel, powerful police chief Scarpia. A triangle drama created for Stubø’s minimalist and in-depth character direction.
Here is done Tosca to a gut-wrenching close study of passion, abuse of power, rebellion and horror. A deadly drama with opera singer Tosca and Puccini’s incomparably beautiful music at the center.
Henrik Schaefer, conductor, lifts the triangle drama together with the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra and choirs.
Eirik Stubø made his Swedish debut as an opera director with Bellini’s Norma at Folkoperan 2022, which was praised by both audiences and critics. Now he takes on Tosca with the same team by his side; set and costume designer Magdalena Åberg, lighting designer Ellen Ruge, mason Therésia Frisk and translator Tuvalisa Rangström.
Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca had its world premiere in Rome in 1900 and is considered one of the masterpieces of operatic literature. With songs such as É lucivan e stelle (the song to life), Vissi d’arte (Tosca’s Prayer) and Scarpia’s Tre sbirri… una carozza – which ends with the choral section Te Deum – it leaves no one unmoved.
Tosca is a co-production between Norrlandsoperan and Folkoperan with a premiere at Folkoperan on September 17, 2025.
