Star visiting
Before we get into tonight’s program, with music by Johannes Brahms and Béla Bartók, there is a small language question:
We call a violinist a violinist, but what is the person who plays the larger string instrument, the viola, called?
That’s right, violist! In this concert, we have the unusual pleasure of having a British star violist visiting. The piece that Timothy Ridout performs in Umeå was written by Béla Bartók (1881-1945). The viola concerto was one of the last works he worked on and was not completed until after his death.
Johannes Brahms’ (1833–1897) Second Symphony is, at first glance, a hopeful work, inspired by nature, but he wrote to his publisher that it was immensely melancholy.
We begin with a short work by Marta Ptaszynska, composer from Warsaw. The work from 2005 is called Lumen and is inspired by the colors that arise when light hits a prism. The evening’s conductor is Ramón Tebar from Spain.
