Season Opener with Beethoven and Shostakovich

The Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra opens the season with a concert that moves from quiet sunrise to powerful orchestral splendor, under the direction of chief conductor and artistic director Eduardo Strausser. The soloist is the international star violinist Ava Bahari from Gothenburg. Danish-American Lil Lacy’s work Aurōra begins the evening with a musical awakening. This is followed by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and the concert ends with Shostakovich’s First Symphony.

Norrlandsoperan || 27 August 2026

Starts at 7:00 p.m. Duration: approx. 2 hours 20 minutes, including a 30-minute break.

Concert

From a tranquil dawn to magnificent intensity

In Lil Lacy’s *Aurōra*, a work from 2023, we encounter a soundscape that emerges from stillness: muffled, dark tones that slowly give way to a sense of light breaking through. The piece moves between the meditative and the expansive, capturing the moment when night turns to day.

Next up is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, one of classical music’s most beloved works. Next up is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, composed as his graduation project when the composer was just nineteen years old. What does it sound like? Youthful, energetic, and full of intensity.

Tonight’s soloist, violinist Ava Bahari (born 1996), has established herself as one of the most expressive musicians of her generation. She grew up in Gothenburg and studied at institutions including the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin.

A season opener where the new meets the familiar. The program also serves as a prelude to the Beethoven Year 2027, when the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death will be commemorated.
