Faithful and Diligent is the first chapter in a film trilogy about the Danish welfare society. It is filmed in the former central post building in Copenhagen. Built to serve as the headquarters of the Danish postal service in 1912, it stands as an architectural symbol of the era’s faith in the future, communication and modern civilisation. Today the building has been transformed into a luxury hotel with a heated rooftop pool.
Based on research into the history and architecture of the building, the work comprises a series of tableaux with musicwritten by the artists themselves. A flamboyant cast of professional actors, drag performers and fellow artists act as the employees; a sexy ghostly work force haunting the empty building.
The film touches on themes such as privatization, working conditions, gender, and the end of the welfare state as we know it. In true cabaret style, it moves across genres and styles of narration with both criticality and humor.
”Troe og agtsom” (faithful and diligent) is the old official motto of the Danish postal service that has been used since the days of absolute monarchy.
The film has received several prizes and is in the collection of The National Gallery of Denmark.
