Från livegenskap till stolthet. Smaïl Kanouté är en bildkonstnär, dansare och koreograf bosatt i Paris. I videoverket The Black Samurai utforskar han legenden om Yasuke Kurosan, en slav från Mosambique som anlände i Japan 1579 och som blev den förste svarte mannen att utnämnas till samuraj. Med både afrofuturistiska och dokumentära stilgrepp skapar Smaïl Kanouté en fängslande hybrid mellan afrikanska och japanska dans- och kamptraditioner, där historien och framtiden existerar samtidigt. Under festivalen får vi uppleva videoverket i närvaro av konstnären själv. Men det är inte allt. I ett exklusivt live-perfomance kommer han också att förkroppsliga Yasuke på en än så länge hemlig plats i centrala Umeå.

Yasuke Kurosan – The Black Samurai by Smaïl Kanouté
An Afrofuturistic story of the slave who became a samurai.
From a life of servitude to a life of meaning and pride. Smaïl Kanouté is a visual artist, dancer and choreographer living in Paris. In his video work The Black Samurai he explores the legend of Yasuke Kurosan – a slave from Mozambique who arrived in Japan in 1579 and became the first black man to be made a samurai. Using both Afrofuturistic and documentary stylistic devices, Smaïl Kanouté creates a captivating hybrid between African and Japanese dance and combat traditions, where history and the future exist side by side. During the festival we will get the opportunity to watch the video in the presence of the artist himself. But that’s not all. In an exclusive live performance he will also embody Yasuke in an as yet undisclosed location in central Umeå.
